In this unit I will be researching about the Animation industry and explore what I would like to work as and where.
double negative
I have recently visited Double Negative. Double Negative is one of the world largest VFX company. It is based in three cities, London, Singapore and Vancouver. They have won many awards like BAFTA and Academy® Awards. They have worked on Inception, Harry Potter, Interstellar, Hunger Games, Godzilla and ect.
Where are some job roles in Double Negative. If I was working for them, I might have to work as a runner for a year. From the presentation from Double Negative I have learnt that being a runner isn't that bad. You can cross over job roles.
Here are the jobs for Double Negative in their three studios. If you compare their three studios there are more jobs in London. Which is a good thing because if I wanted to work as a VFX artist I have a chance working for them.

Rave Late
Nexus Productions have many services which they offer to customers. They are also looking for talented designers, 3D and 2D artists, technical staff, interactive programmers and production; to employ. Currently they are offering jobs for Animation Production manager, Compositing supervisor and Mid/Senior compositor – Freelance.
To become an Animation Production manager, you will need two years of experience in a production company and extensive knowledge on animation. Furthermore, you need to have a good understating of CG animation pipeline and have knowledge of other animation like Claymation, 2D, Stop frame, etc. You will also need good communication/presentation skills, be able to work in a team. Have attention to detailed.
To become a compositing supervisor you will need to have some specialist skills like, Have strong understanding of CG and live action integration within the 2D workflow. Have strong technical knowledge of Nuke and After Effects. You will have to provide technical guidance and training to those in the team.
Out of these three companies I think the most innovative company is Mosaic Films because they are very different from other companies. There isn’t many animated documentary in the UK. I also like how they use 2D. From the Rave Late evening the person who’s representing Mosaic Films said they will not use 3D, which I think is a drawback since 3D gets more popular, some people will watch something in 3D rather than 2D. It would be nice to see some 3D and 2D mixed. I have a feeling that during the couple years along the line Mosaic Films might sell the company due to funding. After seeing their work, I think they got something there. They should embrace what they have and take a risk, getting into 3D.
I think UKIE is experiencing growth compared to others because there’s many games are coming out in the UK. and they need a platform where people work across different company.
Out of the these companies I would say Nexus is the most entrepreneurial because it works as a business. If someone needs an animation done, they would pay for but whereas with Mosaic Films you have to look for funding, and there’s also a limit on how much you can spend.

Photogrammetry
Photogrammetry is where you take a series of pictures and you use software to stitch them together, to create a 3D model. I think this is very interesting because you can use this technique in games and movies. You could model something with clay and scan it in and take it to a rigging software where you can rig it and use it in a feature movie or game. According to the latest report 'Research and Markets' 3D scans is a growing market. In 2013 3D scanning market was estimated to be worth $2.06 billion (£1.23 billion) and by 2018 it will go over $4.8 Billion.
Photogammetry is a very useful, you could scan something in and use 3D printer to print yourself something. Maybe you can use it for stop frame animation. Heres a video of how you might stitch all your pictures together to create a 3D model.

There are many software that you can use for Photogrammetry. Heres a list of some companies that Photogrammetry is their main sector. Agisoft is a company that allows you to use their software to create 3D objects.
I have created using the Autodesk app. I wanted to use it before making a judgement.
Photogrammetry is innovative but I do not think it will replace CG models because data is the most important thing. You would have more control over the model if its CG instead of Photogrammetry.
Photogrammetry isn't perfect there are some drawback because it cannot make a 3D model out of transparent object like a glass or reflective objects. From personal usage It may take long time to render the final image,

Google vr cardboard platform developed by Google for use with a fold-out cardboard mount for a mobile phone. It is inexpensive which is believed to encourage the development of vr applications. The google cardboard works by placing ones phone at optimal distance from the lenses ad using related applications. 3D effects are created by the lenses when held up to one’s eyes. The image is able to move according to the user’s movement allowing the user to feel as if they are in that environment.
