This is the final video of my work in this project. This was a great unit I feel like I have learnt something compared to last year. This has given me a very understanding what goes behind VFX and the integration process.
Even though I might not be great at this I would take some time out to brush up my skills and create some amazing work. This unit was manageable due to my short clip, if it was longer then 30 sec would have missed the deadline. Taking the footage for the shots was a pain but I have learnt how to do it. |
Intro
In this unit I will create two 7 seconds shots with my 3D CG object in the shot. First shot is a locked off shot where camera is not moving and I will have to make the scene day to night. My second shot will be opposites of my first shot, where the camera is moving in daytime hours. Through out this project I will be using Maya and Nuke.
Idea's
Heres a list of idea's of objects that I can have in my environment.

I have created this mood board to come up with ideas. I have pitched two best ideas that I like to Alex.
iDea 1: I will create a sculpture in 3D and integrate it to the environment.
iDea 2: Olden style telephone box. The light will coming from the top where its says telephone box, and also inside the box. I will put the telephone box next to a building.

Primary research
Modeling
These are some of the screen of my process when I was modeling my phone box for this unit. Even this was a easy model to make I made it hard for myself by over thinking it.
Render/Texture Test
Here are some renders that I have done of my phone box. The phone box look very simple and blunt. I was thinking should I texture it or nah. There was something missing it didn't look realistic.
So I asked to Sean Danischevsky for some feedback, he has inspired me to texture my phone box. He told me how great it would look if its textured. I have also beveled the edges to give it the realistic feel. |
To keep things simple and manageable I have created to two UV maps for the box, one out outer shell and one inner shell. I really like how the graffiti came out on the render, it looks very realistic. That's what I was going for. Mission accomplished!
Test 01
This was one of my first test the I have done with cameratracker node. I just wanted to see how the phone box sticks to the ground. I used my phone to record the footage due to that the footage came out shaky. I have got some feedback when I showed it for my formative assessment, the main thing was colour grading. Even though there no colour grading done on this I have improved my colour grading skills. Sean Danischevsky and Alex praised me on the reflection.

The two above shots are failed attempts. Since it was going to be a still night time shot, the shot on the right is too bright and sunny. if was to proceed with this shot I would have many problems with the shadows and people walking passed. Due to that I didn't go with that shot. The shot on the right was too shaky so couldnt used that. It was very windy when I was taking the shot.
|
This was the final shot that I went with, its shaky at the start but after it's not much, I can stabilize it afterwards.

The above two clips showcases the Integration process of Shot 01. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. I have listened what Alex told me on formative to make my night time shot darker, that's what I did. I am not a big fan of dark scenes, it's not my cup of tea.
This is the screenshot of the node graph for my shot (Shot 01). I have kept it very simple so it's manageable also it's easy for me to understand.

The two above shots are failed shots. On the left shot the camera rotates looks fine but it's when you get around to camera tracking in Nuke it doesn't work. And on the right shot there's not maybe markers on the floor. I have used it a cube to test it but at the end cube does not stay on the floor. Also didn't like the location.

After looking for places on where I can shot my footage, I found this place. I found it very interesting, how the half of the container was in the ground and the other half was showing. It was very surreal, something unusual which I very much like.
I also liked how there was a patch on the ground, this gave me a idea what if I put my phone box there? It would be interesting to see how it might look. |
Here are some process that I want through to create my second shot. This was meant to be the easy one but it was hard due to the shadow it did not work as I planed.
To make my scene legit I have used cut polygon tool to make to had broken glass and give it a effect.
Here are some render passes that I used to make my final piece.
This is the node graph of my second shot. Its very simple due to I got the result that I wanted.
